And stupid. And callow. It's also become nerve racking, because yesterday I remembered something:
Once, several years ago, I wrote a love poem for Sam. I used the ocean as a metaphor.
After Sam finished reading the poem, he looked at me, flushed faced, with raised eyebrows and all he could say at first was,
"whoah"
This was because my poem, turned out to be a Freudian slip of uber-erotic proportions.
Baffled, and wanting to accuse him of being a dirty-minded perv, I re-read the poem and
I could. not. Believe it! He was right!
I spent a whole day, pen in hand, shedding tears of chaste devotion to my companion as I worked my feelings into prose, and it came out as smut. I couldn't have come up with that stuff on purpose.
It was supposed to be a love poem, not a lov-in' poem, knowhatimean?
Now I'm absolutely terrified to write anything...
This one should be safe enough (I hope):
Day/Poem #3
untitled
Why am I doing this?
I have nothing to say.
Nothing of weight or importance anyway.
Whenever I attempt metre or rhyme,
It just turns out to be
A big waste of time.
I should quit this nonsense,
Open my eyes.
All this paper's good for
Is swatting flies.

Wow! Your blog is a good read Melissa! I really enjoy it! I have missed you - Alex still talks about Ada and wanting to get together :) It sounds like you're doing well! Do you mind if I tag you to my blog?
Chass
now that is a poem i totally understand ;)
i like your challenge...
after all
you are a poet.
I love it! I also love that you write (smut) poems... LOL! A reason I must admit, we bonded. :)
We are settling in... just happy to finally be here.
Wait a minute!!! You can't blog all that and then not blog your ocean "lovin'" poem! -- Ha ha ha! I'm laughing because, though I have not written a smutty poem, I have perhaps tried to write a, um, ya know "lovin'" poem, and they still all come out preschoolish! Oh well! Perhaps if I adopt you as my mentor I'll be able to write something much more provocative! Tee hee! (see ya at book club!)
I hope that you realize that just your blog posts are poems. You are a poet! You use great words and no matter what you are talking about, I feel like I am right there. That is a talent I hope you can see in yourself. You are wonderful! Keep it up!
