Oy.
I was going to write of my caffeine addiction and my numerous (as in manymanymanymany) attempts to stop consuming it. So I began making this "brief" timeline and half-way through I realized brevity in this context was impossible, and besides, posting a history of my caffeine intake is not really the desired objective of this post.
The objective, then?
MY DILEMMA:
I would like to quit the stuff (energy drinks and soda). But I've made this rule not to make any resolutions that I've ever made before (well shucks.) And they have to be resolutions I can be excited about (um, not excited about withdrawals). What to do, what to DO?
(Yes, I took a picture of myself. It's my blog and I can be as cool or lame as I want.)
Well folks,
WE ALL ARE GIVEN GIFTS, AND MINE - IS FINDING THE LOOPHOLE.
(and i found it)
::: LENT :::
Thaaaat's right. I've never participated Lent before! In fact, I don't even know what it really means. From this outsiders point of view it's basically three-fold:
*A POST SCRIPT REALITY CHECK:
I'm perfectly aware that this whole idea only feels exciting and doable because I don't have to give up anything for another 5 FULL weeks. We'll just see if I feel like walkin' the talk come February 24th...

Thaaaat's right. I've never participated Lent before! In fact, I don't even know what it really means. From this outsiders point of view it's basically three-fold:
- You give up something you love, or think you need (i.e. hyped-up, fizzy syrup). Like a fast.
- By going without, you focus on higher things. (A pretty cool idea).
- It doesn't start until March-ish (many weeks to gear myself up for a challenge) and lasts 40 days (as in, not forever).
A "new" goal and a new adventure.
A PERFECT RESOLUTION
Anyone want to participate in Lent with me? (Anyone?...Anyone? Bueller?)
If you did, what would you go without?

Caffeine is terrible for me! I always ask for decaf, but even so, I'm often up all night if I have even 6 ounces. I've wanted for some time to write an article on all the terrible effects caffeine has on you, but haven't been able to find good fodder. Good luck with your quest!
i'm in!!! i'm thinking about what it is i want to give up. first thing that comes to mind. . . treats:) i'm a bit out of control these days! great idea!
hey melissa, i'm Ann's friend, Flavia. i don't have a job, so i like to look at stranger's blogs. ha! anyway, i am a huge fan of Lent. one, because i am a practicing catholic, and two, because easter is one of my fave holidays. i have a very hard time giving stuff up for Lent, unless i give something up and ask for blessings for someone else. for example, one of my best friends had cancer. i decided to give up chocolate until my birthday (i gave it up in december and my birthday is in july) and ask Jesus to bless my friend during her surgeries. yes, i feel like eating chocolate everyday but at the same time i know i won't be eating chocolate before my birthday (for obvious reasons...). so maybe try that! try giving up those drinks and asking for something meaningful for someone else, not just for yourself. hope that helped!
Great Idea Melissa! I love your Loop Hole! I don't think I ever told you that I 90% gave up Diet Pepsi! I only have it if we are out on a date... which is like... never... So, I really never drink anymore. :o) Good luck with Lent, I'll have to think about something I could give up and work on. :o)
You are so awesome! I would love to participate! I'll let you know what I decide.
ahhh, Hello Kitty has a great idea!
sacrifice and defer the blessing to someone else...i like that a lot. xox
as we all know we are ultimately blessed as well. ;)
you just totally made my night!
are you going to ann's dinner thing friday?! you have to come say hi to me if you do!
my blog is so lame, i think like 5 people read it. thats why i swear and say so many dirty things in it, because i know only my friends that know me read it. hope i don't offend you! but read it whenever you want, that makes me happy.
let me know how the Lent thing went! just so you know, my friend is cancer-free. yeah. let me tell you, i have not been this excited for a LONG time. Lent is da bomb.
Melissa -
A few things:
(1) It makes me laugh that Flavia found you. Ha! It doesn't surprise me, but it does make me laugh.
(2) I would like to join with you on Lent. However, the thing I want to "give up" is a little unorthodox, I guess. I want to give up my laziness, i.e. I need to exercise. I have a hurty back that I know stems from my crappy, lazy, couch-sitting lifestyle. I, too, swore that I would not make "exercise" my new year's resolution, because you know how I hate to be common. Anywho, I will join you on Lent. What are the days?
(3) The dinner Flavia is referring to is the Global Dinner that I am organizing for the University of Utah. I will post about it later, if you are interested.
(4) Thank you for leading for me today. Life saver.
Ann
