I Say '1936' and He Says '1934'

  I really think I'm right.

Things I love about my house.

  • The victorian style and round arch over the front door.
  • It's brick.
  • It's cottage like.
  • It's cozy.
  • It's uneven and delightfully imperfect, charmingly old.
  • Our original hardwood floors.
  • I LOVE the hex tile in our bathroom.  It's not in the best shape but I LOVE it.
  • Only having one toilet to clean.  I'm not a fan of cleaning toilets.
  • We get our water from an Artesian well that is in our backyard.

Things that I don't love about my house:
  • The plaster walls.
  • The uneven...everything. (walls, floors, etc. It's charming, but also a pain in the rear.)
  •  Our original, broken, chipped and stripped hardwood floors.  We've been hard on 'em...
  • The plaster molded around our fireplace in the shape of bricks.  ech, it just looks so bad.
  •  Our tiny, tiny, tiny and ONLY bathroom, which I have been trying to paint today.  If I can't make it bigger, than I want to at least cutie it up a little.

But what do I know about decorating?  Nothing.  For seven years almost, we've lived in this house and I have been deathly afraid to do anything.  I feel incapable and daunted by the potential of putting work and money into something that I might end up hating.  But when Sam suggested that it really couldn't get any worse in our bathroom, I felt daring enough to try.  Really, in the last year or so,  I have challenged myself to try and make this place a little more homey...and it's been slow going and I'm not sure it's working out so well.

I re-caulked around our tub today and I've been trying to repaint, and freshen things up.
We have this tile on the walls in our bathroom that Sam really likes.  I'm not a fan, but I also am not willing to rip it out either, so, I will paint the upper half in hopes to improve the looks of things.  I chose "French Grey" because I wanted a color that would look earthy, like stone or something and go along with the 'lilac' color on the tile.  Also, I hope the contrast of the white trim will give an appearance of "crisp and clean".

Painting drywall is playing harps on soft clouds while attempting to beautify plaster is nothing short of a purgatorial experience.

When painting anything, if it's to be done right, prep is a tedious process - which I actually don't mind - the filling in of holes and sanding and spackling and sanding again and again, and then taping every thing...

See how big I am compared to my bathroom?  haha.

...Unless it's on plaster.  I tried to do a good job.  Neat, nice work.  But in the end, it's a hopeless cause.

But I've blogged about this before and I can't believe I'm doing it again.

And this fascinating post is way longer than I intended it to be.

And I'm too tired to proofread and having been stuck in a small room with fresh paint, I'm not sure I'm in my right mind, exactly.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?  Too dark for such a tiny space?  It doesn't look so green in person...I really would like your opinion!

Mostly, I'm posting to pass the time.   I'm waiting for the paint to dry so I can add another coat.  The can claims that it will dry in 30 minutes but that I should wait 4 hours to put on another coat.
Are you kidding me?  A person like me (lazy and hurried at the same time) is not going to wait an unnecessary EXTRA three and a half hours to paint a wall.  I don't do this for a living.

I love the cottage like look of your house too. I miss having the hardwood floors - lucky for you! We had the same predictament in our last place - small bathroom so we spiffed it up. I painted sea creatures, sea shells, coral and a mermaid mural. Then the bathroom became the favorite room in the house :) I like the color you chose.

I love the blue trim, though you were a little sloppy with it.

I love the color!!! It is very earthy--I am a way big fan of earthy. It makes me miss my tiny sugarhouse abode. :) Now I have an only slightly larger ranch-style abode that is somewhat lacking in character. :) Oh well.
