WW..."Fiber or Bust" AND "Sun Salutation with Ada"

===-===-===-===-===

WARNING: This post contains words
like "constipation" and "catheter". So if these things gross you out I advise you to discontinue reading any further.

I've decided to keep the silly name-Wednesday's Whetting.
(Though I loved your ideas Katrina. You are a clever one. I'm definitely consulting you in the future!)

It's a quarter to Thursday, so I best get crackin' with my weekly goal.

This week it's all about Ada
A little background: Today I took Ada to a pediatric urologist. She has frequent wetting accidents. It's been extremely frustrating because I want to help her, but I just don't know what I'm doing. I've read up a bit on kids with CP and they tend to take longer to potty train. Except that's usually because of mobility issues and Ada is pretty high functioning. The baffling part is she can go weeks without an accident. A month ago she managed to stay dry over night for a full week- But then we'll have a week or two with frequent accidents. She's as baffled as I am about all of this.

So I finally made an appointment. I was worried that even though she didn't have any fever etc, that she might have an infection. Plus, I needed some ideas on how to help her be successful staying dry.

(I hope she forgives me someday for posting all of this.)

(I hope whoever reads this forgives me for posting all of this.)

I'm explaining to the NP what seems like a bewildering mystery and suddenly, in the middle of my story, she points her finger in the air and says "Aha!" (I swear I actually saw a lighted bulb appear above her head).

The diagnosis? The poor girl is probably in need of a little colon cleansing. Turns out she's easily subject to stoppage. Her tiny bladder needs some room. She needs Ex Lax. She needs fiber. She needs water. For the next 3 days, she will need a toilet within 20 feet. That's all the detail I'm going to give.

She also has an infection and is going to have to undergo some more unpleasant tests (with a catheter) in order to rule out other possibilities. But I feel like we're on our way!

Okay, this is all TMI, I know. But you don't understand. I have felt like such a bad mom for so long. I finally feel like I have purposeful, helpful direction.

:::THE CHALLENGE:::

1. Yoga/Stretching and or Strengthening exercises with Ada EVERY day this week (She's walking up on her toes again). This is going to be fun. We've done it before. She's the best Yoga buddy!

2. Fiber focused meals. I'm going to educate myself on this matter and make high fiber meal choices each day. I will also commit to learning at least 3 high fiber recipes this week. I'll share any particularly delicious recipes I come across. (All-bran muffin anyone?)

Just think: By this time next week, the Carter family will come that much closer to knowing the difference between Down-dog and Up-dog; Soluble and Insoluble. Perfect Harmony. How cool will we be?

(I still won't know how to do my hair. That's a challenge for another week...)

Namaste.

You are a mom that cares. Prune juice works like a charm too!!! Fruit is great too! I'll try to think of some great recipes or ideas. OH! Have her drink more fluids too. That definitely helps to push things along.

What a relief to finally figure it out. I didn't know it was a struggle for you, but I know that the few months of potty training Lizzie (which, btw, she is now in diapers...again) was so frustrating. Good job for getting that figured out and good luck on your challenges! See you soon.
